eCommerce
This course would be fully delivered by Mr. William J D Craig. This course aims to consider the current issues in international commerce as they relate to advances in technology in the global market. A series of 10 topic-specific seminars deal with the relevant current issues in international law. Special emphasis will be placed on the study of the work of the OECD and the EU though in addition there will be comparative analysis of the NAFTA countries and other jurisdictions. The course is not concerned directly with the rules of any one state and does not seek to create expertise in one particular methodology. Students will acquire an understanding of what the legal implications of the advent of e-commerce are and what measures are being undertaken to deal with these developments

Corporate Governance
This course is fully delivered by Dr. John Paterson. This course aims at understanding the corporate better. The past 20 years has seen an exponential growth in discussion about corporate governance. Initially, this often arose as a result of high profile corporate failures and was directed towards finding solutions to the specific problems those failures revealed. But such failures also encouraged broader discussion about the nature of the company itself, the adequacy of the legal understanding of the company, and the possible alternatives. There is now an unprecedented focus upon the internal governance of the corporate organization and an, at times, uneasy tension between self-regulation and government intervention. In order to understand this rapidly developing field, it is necessary to answer some fundamental questions about the nature of the company, to examine theories that have influenced the debate and to consider emerging trends. This new course not only allows students an insight into one of the most interesting aspects of the corporate world, but also provides them with the knowledge and analytical skills to operate effectively in this increasingly important field.

Intellectual property Law
This course would be delivered by Dr. Catherine Ng. This course aims to examine the three main pillars of intellectual property law: patents, trade marks, and copyright. The emphasis will be on the substantive law and policies at the national, European, and international levels. The course offers a discussion of how best to protect and exploit the three main intellectual property rights. Students will be invited to appreciate the competing interests among governments, creators, current and future owners, users, licensees, and consumers of intellectual property, and to critically analyze the law and policies behind intellectual property protection. The course will be taught by a team of specialists in each of the three subjects. Copyright and trade marks will be taught by two lecturers whose research, teaching, and publication are focused on these subjects. Patents will be taught by an external lecturer with extensive practice experience in the area. Students should therefore benefit from both a theoretical and a practical view of intellectual property law.

International Taxation
The international tax law module examines the international rules and principles within which states construct their own rules for taxing international transactions. It is concerned with a framework of rules and principles which restrict the freedom of states in taxing international transactions. The purpose of the course is to consider current issues in international commerce as they relate to taxation in a global market. The methodology adopted is that of topic specific seminars which cover key current issues in international law. Students will approach the subject from a range of differing academic backgrounds. The course aims to set the context in UK tax law for an examination of contemporary issues in international tax law with special emphasis on the European dimension. This is to be done by subject-specific analysis of prominent issues, at a level of study appropriate for the LL.M. This is also fully delivered by Mr. William J D Craig.

COURSE DURATION
  • One academic year split over three terms of four months each. Intakes are by September or January.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Undergraduates from Law or Economics, or undergraduates from any stream, with law/economics as a subject of study, are invited to apply.

  • Participants in LLM often have significant experience in a range of areas and a great variety in the background of students makes an enormous contribution to the programmes.
Teaching Methodology
Teaching methods combine lectures, seminars, project work, e supported projects and assignments and independent reading. The programme is designed to stimulate critical and creative thought and to question assumptions about law. To achieve this objective, good students are selected, classes are kept deliberately small, and independent reading and group discussion are strongly emphasized. This allows very close contact with members of the Law School. Personal skills are developed through group project work, presentations, and participation in group discussion. A dissertation is compulsory for the taught LLM, and it is done during the summer months.
